How to Apply Vinyl Wall Lettering

Items needed:

  • Masking tape
  • Measuring Tape or Level
  • Applicator - sqeegee such as a ruler, bank card or anything item with a thin hard straight edge.

Before you start:

Before application, clean desired surface to remove grease or dust. Wall quotes come in rolls because of the length. Unwrap the quote and let it sit flat until it stops wanting to roll up. Once the wall quote lays flat, lay the quote on  flat surface face down, (you won't be able to read the quote) and rub the paper back side with an applicator to ensure the letters are sticking to the cloudy looking transfer tape.

Installation steps:

Using a pencil, lightly draw a straight and level line on your wall where you want your quote to be. (Be sure your surface is clean and smooth. If your wall if freshly painted, you should wait 3 weeks before applying lettering). A level works best, but if you don’t have a level, you can use a ruler or tape measure and measure up from your floor. Make sure you draw your line a little longer then your wall quote.

Next place your quote, grid side up, on a table or hard flat surface. Using a squeegee (this could be a bank/credit card, ruler…or anything with a thin hard edge.) firmly rub back and forth several times over each individual letter. This will make sure the letters are not stuck on the backing that you will be peeling off in the next step. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ONLY RUBBING ON THE GRID SIDE!

Line up the pre-drawn line on your quote with the line you drew on your wall. Once you are sure your quote is level, tape along the top of your quote with masking tape. You can use small pieces, or put one long strip across the top. Press the tape down firmly to be sure the quote is secure because you don’t want the tape to come loose until you are completely finished the application process

Next flip, the quote up, and hold firmly against the wall. The vinyl backing with a grid design, should now be facing you. Very slowly, peel off this shiny grid backing. The letters should not remain on the piece you are peeling off.

Sometimes, the letters get sticky and become stuck to the shiny piece you are peeling off, so it is very important you don’t rush this step. If this happens, simply fold the shiny backing back overtop of the quote again and rub firmly with your squeegie on top to make sure letter releases. Some very fine script fonts are harder to release from the shiny backing then others. If necessary, use your fingernail to get the letter started to release as you are peeling the backing off.

Once the backing has been peeled off, carefully pull the quote back down to the wall and in place. If the quote is long, be sure to keep your fingers on the middle as you pull down so that the middle is stuck down first and perfectly aligned. Then work left of the center, then right of the center, using your squeegee.

Continue using your squeegie, to firmly rub over the lettering to take out wrinkles and bubbles. This process will also ensure that the lettering is stuck to the wall. You will want to go over the letters, several times.

You are now ready to peel the final layer away to reveal your letters. It works best to pull this layer off very slowly at an angle, keeping the paper flat against the wall as you pulling it off. By keeping this layer flat against your wall, you will avoid pulling the letters off the wall. If the letters are not sticking to the wall, fold the backing back over the letter/s, and rub with your squeegie again.

Once this final layer is removed, press on each letter to be sure they have completely adhered to the surface. You are now ready to stand back and admire your new wall words for years to come. Congratulations!

OVERLAY APPLICATION:

Your overlay will arrive in two pieces. They will be numbered 1 and 2. Number 1 will be applied to your wall first, using the 6 steps as illustrated above. The only thing you will notice different is that when you are finished the first application there will be 4 vinyl diamond shaped figures on your wall on the outside of your quote. (don't worry these will easily peel off your wall when the whole process is complete). On quote number 2 you will notice that there is 4 diamond shape cutouts right through the paper around the quote. To apply quote number 2, simply place the cutout shapes directly overtop of the vinyl shapes already on your wall. Once lined up, tape the quote in place and proceed to follow the regular 6 step application process above. The final step is to gently peel the 4 diamond shape pieces of vinyl from your wall.
